Formerly centered solely around daily fantasy sports, now with a headlining sports betting product (particularly in New Jersey), and recently integrated with casino-style games, DraftKings has found a new way to expand even further.
On Wednesday, ahead of Super Bowl LIII, the DFS and NJ sports betting power unveiled Big Game Squares, a free-to-play contest that boasts total cash prizes of more than $50,000.
As such, DraftKings implements a popular office pool-style contest for its users.
What is Squares from DraftKings?
Boiled down, Squares essentially has the appearance of bingo.
A virtual card gets split up into individual boxes, each corresponding with a column and row for a specific score at the end of each quarter of the Feb. 3 game in Atlanta.
For example, the top row’s numbers would be dedicated to the Los Angeles Rams, while the left column’s figures associated with the New England Patriots. Only single-digit numbers are used, 0 to 9, and are randomly placed in the top row and left column.
At the end of the quarter, users view the game’s score and examine their selected boxes, whose associated individual numbers must match the final digit of each team’s score. So, if the Rams lead the Patriots 14-10 at the half, and one of your boxes lines up with “Los Angeles 4, New England 0,” congratulations. You’re a winner.
How DraftKings Squares works
All DraftKings Sportsbook users — not just those in NJ — have access to free-to-play Big Game Squares. (You won’t be able to place real-money wagers unless you’re in New Jersey, however). Clicking on the contest within the sportsbook’s app will take users to a separate landing page, on which they will select their Super Bowl squares.
The chosen square will serve as a user’s selection for all four quarters. However, DraftKings will not reveal the random placement of numbers until the start of the Super Bowl. Prior to this, users will be presented with a blank board, not knowing which customers correspond with which squares.
As noted above, if the final digit of each team’s score matches a user’s square, he or she will win a cash prize.
Draftkings Squares Free
Multiple users can select the same square per quarter, and the same cash prizes will go to each of those users.
As one might expect, every sportsbook in New Jersey is planning something special for the Super Bowl.
DraftKings Sportsbook is going with an old favorite — Super Bowl Squares.
Technically, the book is calling it Big Game Squares because of NFL copyrights and whatnot. Now,New Jersey online sports betting is legal, but anybody in the country can play this game for free.
That’s not a typo. Big Game Squares is available for the entire country.
The entire US has a chance for a share of at least $50,000 in cash prizes. In fact, DraftKings has already pledged to bump that amount up for every 100,000 entries.
How to play Big Game Squares on DraftKings
If you’ve never played football squares before, that’s no problem. It’s not a game that requires too much thought.
Draftkings Super Bowl Squares
Here’s what to do:
- Download the DraftKings Sportsbook app. Make an account or log in, then head to the promotions tab. Tap “Play now.”
- Choose a square. The app will present you with a 10-x-10 grid with blank squares. Select the square you feel is best.
- Get your number. Just before the game begins, the app will randomly assign each square a number. At first, the number won’t mean anything, so don’t worry about it. Just keep it in mind.
- Watch the game. Watch the 2019 Super Bowl. Pay attention to the last digit of each team’s final score.
- Win! If your square’s numbers match those two digits, you win. DraftKings will be in touch regarding your prize amount.
A few things to note:
- The board will be blank for everyone, and there’s no way to know which numbers will go to each square.
- Users will only get to pick one square, so choose wisely.
- Multiple users can pick the same square.
- DraftKings will award prizes for having the correct combination of numbers at the end of each quarter.
DraftKings Sportsbook expands its reach
Don’t be deceived. Big Game Squares is absolutely a marketing stunt.
No sporting event draws more sports betting than the Super Bowl. Few events draw higher television ratings.
So, DraftKings Sportsbook wants to make a splash on the national stage with this promotion. The casual bettor will come running when he or she hears the siren call of free money.
The fact that players must download the app to play means that a wave of new user acquisition for the company is coming. For company management, paying $50,000+ for that is a no-brainer.
